Is Parenting An Act of Service?

My husband and I were watching Elder Ballard’s talk last night titled, “Be Anxiously Engaged“. He spoke mostly of how much better the world would be if we were like the worker bees that worked together and were constantly doing our part to provide service to our fellow man. I totally agree. If we can find those people in need, and serve them, then our lives will be happier, and the world will be a better place. However, after the talk was over, I turned to my husband and asked him, “Does attending to every need my three small children … Continue reading

Aniston Gets Engaged and Pitt Gets Married?

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston divorced nearly seven years ago and yet their names are still often tied together in the tabloids. This seems especially true lately. If you believe what you read, Brad and fiancée Angelina Jolie are always trying to rain on Aniston’s parade as far as the headlines go. Pitt and Jolie announced their engagement in April after seven years and six children together. At the time, I think the tabloids were accusing Pitt and Jolie of ruining Aniston’s possible wedding plans by upstaging her. Now, it may be Aniston that upstaging Pitt and Jolie. Rumors were … Continue reading

The Meeting of the Parents

A friend of ours just got engaged to his girlfriend. We both like her a lot so we’re really happy for them. This past weekend was a big deal for them: the meeting of the families. Both their sets of parents came down to the area for their first official meeting (or possibly their first meeting period; our friends have only been dating for about a year and their families don’t live in the area). “Did you get a chance to ask Rich how it went yet?” I asked Jon. “Nope,” Jon replied with a bit of a grimace. We … Continue reading

Prince William Gets Engaged

The Brits have often referred to her as “Waitey Katie” but now it seems like Kate Middleton may have the last laugh as it was announced today that she and Prince William are engaged to be married. The prince proposed last month while the two vacationed in Kenya. They are expected to give an interview later today. The two made their first public appearance as a newly engaged couple today. William gave Middleton his mother’s oval blue sapphire engagement ring as a way of making sure “my mother didn’t miss out on today,” he said. Their wedding, scheduled for spring … Continue reading

Balancing Preschool Parenting and Work At Home

If you work at home and have a preschooler, how do you work and how do you parent? I’ve a relative newbie to this work-at-home gig. Juggling contracts and consistent blogging gigs can be a little crazy when you are also the primary caregiver for a small child. Small children know that the computer is sucking your brain away, no matter how much you work to pretend it isn’t happening. How do I structure my work at home day? Well, on my at home days, my daughter watches half an hour of television in the morning. That is the beginning … Continue reading

Number of Parents Increasing, But Not Marriages

With all the hoopla surrounding the NCAA basketball tournament, Bruce Willis’ new marriage, and Lance Armstrong’s broken collarbone, you may have missed this bit of breaking news today: A record number of babies were born in the United States in 2007… and nearly half were welcomed by unmarried parents. Sarcasm aside (regarding the first part of the last sentence), this fact is legitimate. According to a new federal study, more babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any other year in the nation’s history – and a wedding ring made little difference in the matter. The new … Continue reading

Celebrity Parents Cashing In on Baby—How Much is Too Much?

As I mentioned in my previous blog there is a bidding war brewing over who will land exclusive rights to the first shots of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s soon-to-be born twins (reportedly they are fraternal twin girls due next week). The latest reports have the figure at more than $15 million. While we won’t know what the final figure will be until Jolie pops out her new babes, we now know the exact amount other celebs are getting for the first published photos of their tiny tots. According to TMZ.com, first time parents Matthew McConaughey and his girlfriend Camila … Continue reading
