Singles Appreciation Day

Most of the year I don’t mind being single, in fact, there are a lot of things I like about it. I like having time to myself, I like being able to make decisions on my own, and most of all I really like the one-on-one time I get with my son because of it. However, being alone on the holidays can get lonely, especially on ones like today that are so focused on a love that isn’t in your life anymore. While everyone else is getting spoiled with candle lit dinners, you’re at home alone or taking care of … Continue reading

Stong and Confident Single Mother

While there are many challenges to being a single parent there are also benefits that are often overlooked. This is not how I expected my family to look, but here it is, and I had to make the best of it. I have changed and grown so much since becoming a single mother. I am stronger, have more confidence in myself and I take more responsibility for things. When I was married I didn’t need to know how the lawnmower worked or how to fix the kitchen sink. When I was first divorced I was at a loss about how … Continue reading

Insurance for Single Mothers

For many single mothers health insurance is a luxury they just can’t afford. Although many are offered medical benefits through their place of employment, most can’t afford the premiums that go with it. The government does offer aid in the form of Medicaid, but there are certain restrictions that keep some of us from being able to take advantage of the things that are offered. Although most of us fall within the income guidelines for Medicaid, if you are not going through the Office of Recovery Services to collect child support, you are ineligible to receive benefits through the state. … Continue reading

Parent Teacher Conferences

The kids are back in school and with school comes the dreaded parent teacher conferences. As a single parent these can be a little tricky. However, there are some real benefits to being able to meet together with your child’s teacher. This helps everyone to be on the same page when it comes to your child’s schooling. It also provides a united front for your child. If you are … Continue reading

Benefits To Being A Single Parent

As a parent, every day I’m amazed to see the young woman my daughter is turning into. I think that is true for all parents, we look at our children and there is so much joy that we get to be a part of something so wonderful. As a single parent there is a little sadness mixed with that joy, sadness that our kids don’t get to grow up in an intact family, that Daddy doesn’t help tuck them in every night. But always there is joy and pride in watching them grow and seeing the men and women they … Continue reading

New Graduates Can Be Covered By Parent’s Health Insurance

In the next few weeks, there will be a lot of college graduation ceremonies taking place. This is the first group of graduates who will be finishing school since the Affordable Care Act required health insurance companies to cover people who are between the ages of 19 and 26 under their parent’s health insurance plan. This is going to make a big difference. The part of the Affordable Care Act that is going to be the most beneficial to new graduates is the part that was made into law in September of 2010. From that point on, insurance companies were … Continue reading

Does Buying Organic Make You a Better Parent?

If you watched Monday’s episode of “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” then you’d think the answer was: “Absolutely!” Take that Jon. Monday’s show featured Kate taking her kids to an organic produce farm run by an Amish family. Cameras captured Kate and her eight kids picking up fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, corn and other veggies at “Henry’s,” then taking their goods home to make a “meal from scratch.” “It is pure joy when I can go to a produce stand and buy produce that has been picked that morning and it will land on my table that evening for dinner,” … Continue reading

I can just hear the groans now as I use those two words: Health Insurance. What issue is more controversial, more stressful, and more overwhelming for ANY family, if not health insurance?
