Why Kids and Smartphones Don’t Mix

No one said using a smartphone is a sure-fire way to avoid making stupid mistakes. I’ve covered the not-so wonderful side of technology in previous posts.  However, this latest gem goes beyond falling down manholes or setting expensive texting records. If you are a parent, you now have another reason to safeguard your smartphone when your kids are around. Paul Stoute is living proof that protecting your cellphone from little fingers is one of the smartest parenting moves you can make. The Oregon dad is the new owner of a vintage car, thanks to his toddler daughter’s cellphone skills. Or, … Continue reading

The Whopping Family Cell Phone Bill

Cell phones as we know them are only a few decades old, and yet it is hard to think about living without them, despite the fact that humankind survived centuries without cell phones. It isn’t unusual these days to be spending $250 or more a month for your family cell phones. In some families, the cell phone expense may be the second highest monthly bill, after the mortgage or the rent. Doing without other things, from eating out to dental care (in some cases) in order to afford cell phones has become the norm. How did things get so crazy? … Continue reading

Tethered To A Cell Phone

I don’t know how mothers did this single mom thing before cell phones. I’m tethered to mine and so is Hailey. I don’t know what I would do if I could not reach her at any time. Being a working single mother meant that Hailey has always been on her own a lot. Thanks to cell phones she could call me anytime she was frightened and I could call her anytime I just wanted to know she was ok. Hailey got her first phone when she was twelve. Lots of people told me that was too young but for us, … Continue reading

Time for Cell Phone?

In this day and age it seems like everyone has a cell phone, children and teenagers alike. I recently was student teaching in a sixth grade class at a local elementary school. Nearly all of the children had cell phones, and most of them were much nicer than mine. Children as young as kindergarten are feeling pressure to get a cell phone and cell phone companies are responding to their plight. They even have cell phones designed for toddlers now in case of an emergency. Cell phone companies such as Firefly Mobile have cell phones designed specifically for children’s needs … Continue reading

Controversial Study Links Mobile Phones to ADHD

A study was done with mice that involved exposing pregnant mice to an active mobile phone. When the baby mice became adults, they exhibited symptoms that could indicate that these mice had ADHD. The researchers believe that this means that the same results can happen in humans. Critics point to the flaws with this assumption. A study was done that involved 33 pregnant mice. The mice were exposed to radiation from a muted, but active, mobile phone that was located a short distance from the cage that the mice were in. The phone was on an uninterrupted call for seventeen … Continue reading

Cell Phones

Today as I was teaching my 8-11 year old girls in Sunday School the issue of cell phones came up. When I was in elementary school I never would have even thought to ask my parents for a cell phone. In my mind it was like asking for a car, it was an adult thing. None of my friends had cell phones and I don’t even remember my mom having one until I was in middle school. As a kid I remember when my grandpa came home with the cool “car phone.” We all thought he was so high tech! … Continue reading

Cell Phones and Single Parents

How did single parents survive before cell phones? My mother was a single parent for several years when I was a teenager, she had four kids at the time and we were always going in different directions. How did she maintain her sanity? Within two years of getting divorced I got my daughter a cell phone. I saw it as a way to prevent arguments and keep my heart from exploding. The first summer that she was home alone just about did me in. My child is impulsive, a friend comes to the door, they play at our house for … Continue reading

Cell Phone Vendors and Insurance

Cell phones have gotten more and more complex over the years. Although you can get a cell phone that doesn’t do much more than let you make calls, most people are opting for smartphones that do a whole lot more. Often, vendors will offer a form of insurance for these very expensive phones. A new law may soon be passed in Nebraska that requires cell phone vendors to get a license to sell insurance. What kind of cell phone do you have? I have just recently gotten my very first cell phone. I’ve never had one before, and for years, … Continue reading

Fixing Your Cell Phone Photos

For smart phones like the iPhone and Android phones, you can usually do all your editing right on the phone using an app that you download from the App Store or the Android Market. If you don’t have one of these popular phones, though, and you want to make your phone pictures look a little better, you can always load them onto your computer and use regular photo editing software. You don’t need expensive software to give your cell phone pictures a boost. Today I tried out Picnik.com, and I have to say, you can do a whole lot with … Continue reading

How Often Do You Take Pictures With Your Cell Phone?

I don’t own a pimped out smartphone that can take super clear shots, and then turn them into a mini music video. In fact, I don’t own a cell phone with picture-taking capabilities at all. I wish I did, but I don’t. Rather, I have remained loyal to my fully functional traditional digital camera… that does not allow me to call friends or family. Typically, I don’t think twice about what I don’t have. Instead, I prefer to focus on what I do have and quell the green-eyed monster. However, after attending the first day of school with my first … Continue reading
