Kids Need More Than Child Support

Why is it that some people seem to think their financial responsibility to their children ends as soon as they sign the child support check? I always laugh at people, men and women, I’m not choosing sides, who say, I give him/her child support, what more do they want? Has anyone ever really thought about what it costs to raise a child alone? Just getting a two bedroom apartment instead of a one bedroom is at least $200 more a month, and that is just the beginning of the additional expenses. I know in my situation every time something came … Continue reading

It’s for the Kids

When it comes to divorce, nothing is ever simple, and child support is no exception. While the calculation of child support is fairly straightforward, it can still be the cause of issues among many divorced couples. There are plenty of deadbeat dads out there that choose not to support their children. Many others stand up and are faithful in their child support payments each month and as always there are those that fall in the broad spectrum in between. I have even heard of some women refusing to receive child support from their ex for a number of reasons. Some … Continue reading

Insurance for Single Mothers

For many single mothers health insurance is a luxury they just can’t afford. Although many are offered medical benefits through their place of employment, most can’t afford the premiums that go with it. The government does offer aid in the form of Medicaid, but there are certain restrictions that keep some of us from being able to take advantage of the things that are offered. Although most of us fall within the income guidelines for Medicaid, if you are not going through the Office of Recovery Services to collect child support, you are ineligible to receive benefits through the state. … Continue reading

They Say It Comes in Threes

At our house it seems like when one thing goes, everything goes. It has been one of those months. As a single mom I am always strapped for money. I’m a full time student and have very little money coming in every month. So when my ex husband lost his job a month ago and child support got cut nearly in half I was about out of my mind wondering how I was possibly going to make ends meet. Then about two weeks later the car broke down. The battery and the alternator both went in the same day. Luckily … Continue reading

Being Flexible

I don’t handle surprises well. So when my ex husband lost his job last month I started feeling a little crazy. You would think now that we’re divorced these things wouldn’t affect me quite as much, but I think the opposite is true. This meant child support was cut in half, which was a huge hit for me since money was already tight. It also meant that our son’s visitation schedule was a little more up in the air. My ex was able to go back to an old job working at a local restaurant, which meant working nights and … Continue reading

Learning to Be Smart with Your Money

As a single parent I can’t remember a time when money wasn’t tight. Child support doesn’t cover all of the kid’s expenses and just the everyday necessities add up quickly. In many cases the family has gone from having two incomes to one. You have to find a way to make sure there is food on the table, a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs, not to mention all of the things they end up needing as they are starting school, etc. The bills just keep piling higher and higher. This is when it becomes crucial to have … Continue reading
