Choosing A Stroller For Your Baby

One item that you might be thinking about including in your baby registry is a stroller. I struggled with the decision to add a stroller to my baby registry because it is a larger gift than most people’s budgets could accommodate. I added one after my mother pointed out that with many stores that have baby registries, you can purchase items from your registry at a discount if you do not receive them as gifts. A group of my aunts surprised me by pooling their resources to purchase my stroller as a baby shower gift. The variety of strollers that … Continue reading

Be Careful What You Wish For

Its funny how as a parent something you wish for can end up coming back to bite you. As any regular reader of mine knows, my 17-year-old son is going through the process of enlisting in the Air Force. It has been a journey that has taken me up and brought me down. There are so many emotions involved. My latest hope was that my son would do well on his ASVAB test. That stands for “Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.” The higher you score on this test, the more opportunities that are available. So as most parents hope for, … Continue reading

Kids Need More Than Child Support

Why is it that some people seem to think their financial responsibility to their children ends as soon as they sign the child support check? I always laugh at people, men and women, I’m not choosing sides, who say, I give him/her child support, what more do they want? Has anyone ever really thought about what it costs to raise a child alone? Just getting a two bedroom apartment instead of a one bedroom is at least $200 more a month, and that is just the beginning of the additional expenses. I know in my situation every time something came … Continue reading

Seventy-One Foster Children… and Counting!

Thomas Rose and his wife, Ann Rose, have been foster parents to a total of seventy-one foster children over the years. They are hoping to welcome another foster child into their family very soon. Many of their former foster children remain in contact with them. This must mean that this non-traditional family is doing really well. Over the years, the definition of “family” has changed quite a bit. It has grown from the connection between people who are blood relatives to the relationship between parents and their non-biological children. This can make things a bit challenging for a genealogist, who … Continue reading

Teach Children To Give

When I was a little girl and my parents gave me an allowance I was required to tithe ten percent to church. I dutifully put a dime in the tithe envelope and deposited the envelope in the offering plate in children’s church. We advocate for children now by fostering. Jessie is learning to care for others less fortunate by sharing her home, parents, and possessions with them. When she has a better understanding of money, then we will start to instill in her more of a stewardship to help others. There are opportunities all around us to help others. Start … Continue reading

When Your Child Won’t Eat Anything

Many children who have some form of a sensory processing disorder struggle with food. This can cause some kids to absolutely refuse to eat much of anything at all, to the point where the child is on the verge of malnutrition. The more a parent can understand about what their child is experiencing, the better the chance there is that the child will, eventually, choose to eat something. It’s not unusual for children to go through a stage where he or she becomes a “picky eater”. Often, this is something that happens when a child is transitioning between baby food … Continue reading

Child Care As A Home-Based Business

I don’t know how it is where you live, but I do know that where I live there is a shortage of day care. Many families in my town want to find quality child care so that both parents can work, but there are not nearly enough spots available in the local day care programs. If something similar is happening in your community, you may be able to find work helping one or more of the families that are caught in the day care crunch. High quality, private child care is something that many parents would love to have for … Continue reading

Should There Be Dual Citizenship for Internationally Adopted Children?

My last blogs were about the boy sent back to Russia and in which jurisdiction the abandonment occurred. (You can click here if you missed last week’s update .) I learned from his adoption agency’s website that children adopted from Russia to the U.S. have dual citizenship in both countries. This was news to me. Adopting from Korea, we were advised to inform our agency when the adoption was finalized so that they could sent a request to South Korea to remove her from the Korean citizenship rolls. This was especially important because all male citizens in South Korea serve … Continue reading
