Detoxing your Life

The other day, I was on the phone with my best friend. We were complaining about aches and pains and how we didn’t think it could be stress because we just didn’t feel stressed. Then, we proceeded to complain about different things in our lives for the next 30 minutes. She laughed and said, “But, we aren’t stressed about anything!” Stress can affect our health – both mental and physical. But how can we detox ourselves of poisonous stress? First, ask yourself some honest questions. Do you get irritated easily? Do you always feel like you are rushing from place … Continue reading

A Good Cry Is What You Need

I love being a mother. There is nothing I’d rather do than parent my daughter. I feel that she is truly a gift. I wouldn’t have chosen to be a single parent but that’s the way it happened. I try to be positive, I want my daughter to always look on the bright side. Yes, sometimes life is hard, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it defeat you. I am always the first to say, keep your chin up, do it for your kids. Sometimes, I forget to take my own advice. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. … Continue reading

Protecting Your Marriage

Most people don’t think twice about insuring their home or car or things that are valuable. They don’t think twice about installing security measures like screens and alarms. But what about protecting your marriage? What can you and I do to protect our marriages? Here are some suggestions. And no, these aren’t all mine. Many came from families.com members. Respect and being careful about the way we talk to our spouse. It was interesting to see how many of you mentioned this as essential. No marriage is great absolutely great all the time. Your spouse isn’t perfect and neither are … Continue reading

Electronic Holiday Greetings – a Fun Project For the Family

For the past few years we’ve been sending our Christmas greetings online. And yes, it saves a lot of time and money. But the main reason is that it’s so much fun. We pick about fifteen or so pictures that represent what our year was about. It takes the family a couple of hours of browsing through the photos. While we browse we laugh and remember. Many years ago we used to make a photo collage out of our pictures and copy them. We’d insert the photos into the cards and mail them. A few years ago my computer wizard … Continue reading

Fun is Okay for a Single Parent Too

I think many of us single parents work so hard to distance ourselves from the stereotype of the irresponsible, different-date-every-night, financially precarious single parent that we take on a very serious and determined demeanor. In fact, we can get so focused on putting family first and rising to the challenges of duty and responsibility that we forget to give ourselves permission to have some fun. Some of us may even be “punishing” ourselves for our situations or think that we don’t deserve to have a good time since our lives are such a challenge. But, in fact, single parents deserve … Continue reading

Freezer Cooking: Sharing With a Friend

Freezer cooking is a big job if you plan to do several weeks at a time. In fact, it can dominate a major part of a day, and can even sometimes require a second day. While I don’t mind, some other’s get lonely, they get stressed and frustrated and honestly, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel (the several weeks worth of frozen meals) that get them through the whole process. It does not have to be that bad. In fact, a freezer cooking session can be quite enjoyable. Especially if you invite a friend along! Invite a … Continue reading

Rock Climbing At Red Rock Canyon

In a previous blog I tried my best to sway you from getting sunburned while walking from casino to casino (or buffet to buffet) during your trip to Las Vegas. Rather, if you are going to cause damage to your skin I suggested you do so at Red Rock Canyon—a.k.a. a rock climber’s mecca. (Kidding aside you should really apply sunscreen to all body parts before exposing yourself to the Nevada sun.) There are a few points I left out of that blog that I’ve decided to share with you now in hopes you will take the 25 minute drive … Continue reading

How Do You Want To Be Remembered?

Author and education, Michele Borba, Ed.D, has a question for you: How do you want to be remembered? She wants you to imagine that your kids are all grown up with families of their own. They are reminiscing about their childhood and describing what it was like to have you as a parent. Do you want to be remembered for all the activities you signed your kids up for or for the simple lessons you taught your kids, like how to laugh, how to act with confidence or how to be resilient? Do you want to be remembered for the … Continue reading
