Fight Isolation!

One of the realities of many a single parent’s life is a tendency toward isolation. We get up early and get our kids off to school or day care, go to work and work a full day, run errands, attend our children’s extracurricular activities, make dinner and do chores, and then collapse into bed at night—only to do it all over again on the next day. It easy to get our lives into such a routine that we start to feel really isolated from anything outside of our little tract. For healthy selves and healthy families, however, we need to … Continue reading

Finding Where You Fit In

Since being divorced I feel like I am in a constant state of limbo. Most of my good friends are married now, while others are continuing to enjoy the single life. I am no longer married, but my single life is far different from that of my friends. There are times when I envy both parties. I long for the companionship and support that marriage could bring, and I envy those single friends who can do what they want when they want without a care in the world. I am a mother first, and as such, my priority is to … Continue reading

PayPal and Your Business

For many PayPal is a love/hate relationship. PayPal is like the popular girl in school that no likes but everyone fights to sit next to in the cafeteria. Most of us have a PayPal account and most ecommerce sites are now accepting PayPal. Yet, we have all heard the rumors, complaints, and horror stories of those who use PayPal. Many swear it off and refuse to ever do business with PayPal again. From the high fees to their policy of siding with the consumer even at the expense of the seller PayPal has gained some enemies. Seller’s burned by con … Continue reading

Student-to-Student Program Benefits All

In Hudson, Wisconsin there’s a high school working to create a better educational and social environment for each of its students. The program, Student-to-Student is a partnership between Hudson High School and Bridge for Youth with Disabilities. It pairs students in the special education program with “mentor” students and is the brainchild of Margi Miller, who was on the board of Bridge for Youth With Disabilities when she thought of the idea. She is the mother to both a child without disabilities and a child with disabilities. Now in its fifth year, Student-to-Student has seen a huge increase in popularity. … Continue reading

Don’t Forget Who You Are

We talk a great deal here in the Single Parents Blog about how we can better handle transitions and let go of the past so that we can enjoy the present and embrace the future. I think it might be also important, however, to talk about how we can keep from losing sight of who we are, or reconnect with pieces of us that might have been lost along the way. As a parent, the realities of single parenthood might make us forget our core values or give in to a way of parenting that does not necessarily mesh with … Continue reading

Time Tight? Prioritize Your Interests

We talk here in the single parents blog about the importance of finding time for self care and personal interests, but I know first hand that it is much easier to talk about it than to actually find the time and energy to do it. One of life’s lessons that I learned from an older mentor is that instead of just giving up and giving in as a single parent and assuming that we are going to have to put our personal interests on hold until our kids are out of the house or our life situations change–we can prioritize. … Continue reading

If The Kids Come First, Where Am I On the List?

I was talking with another single parent the other day and she said “Well, you know how it is, the kids always come first!” Of course, as parents, most of us do put our kids first and try to keep our children’s welfare and interests at the heart of our family focus—but as a single parent, we can lose ourselves in that and start to wonder where we fit in to the whole family picture if it all about the kids! It took me YEARS to get some semblance of balance into my life as a parent and, especially as … Continue reading
