Finding Where You Fit In

Since being divorced I feel like I am in a constant state of limbo. Most of my good friends are married now, while others are continuing to enjoy the single life. I am no longer married, but my single life is far different from that of my friends. There are times when I envy both parties. I long for the companionship and support that marriage could bring, and I envy those single friends who can do what they want when they want without a care in the world. I am a mother first, and as such, my priority is to … Continue reading

Finding Your Support System

I can only imagine going through a divorce without a sound support system by my side. I was fortunate enough to have two parents who had gone through a divorce and could empathize with what I was going through. They understood the pain I was feeling, even though the divorce was inevitable. They stood by my side when I was completely falling apart. They helped me pack up my little apartment and move in to their basement. They helped me while I was getting back on my feet and going back to school. They supported me through thick and thin … Continue reading

Finding Joy in the Little Things

Some days are just hard. When you are going through a divorce it seems most days are that way, at least for a little while. I’ve found that even after almost two years many days are still difficult. It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself when you are in the midst of trials. You look up at the sky and wonder, why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve this? The truth is we all have trials. They are meant to make us strong. When you find yourself feeling down and wondering how you are going … Continue reading

Sometimes, it is easy. You go about your day and then when it is time to sit down at your computer and write, you recall something that you saw or did that day which just so happens to be excellent fodder for a blog post. You spend the next ten … Continue reading

Protecting Yourself as a Single Parent

This has been kind of a scary week for me. Last Saturday I had the bright idea of taking Logan downtown to walk around Temple Square and see some of the sights of downtown Salt Lake City. We’ve done this on several occasions, attended outside concerts, and browsed along the streets together. But now, I’m afraid I am going to have to think twice the next time I consider traveling downtown just the two of us. We decided to take the Trax Train in order to avoid the stresses of parking in Salt Lake. The ride up wasn’t so bad. … Continue reading

Finding Your Strength

I have a dear friend who has struggled through an abusive marriage. After finding the courage to separate from him she found herself pregnant with twins and went back in hopes of keeping her family together, despite her controlling husband. As I watched her struggling to keep things together I couldn’t help but think of my own separation experience. I remembered that desperation to keep my family together, I can only imagine if I had found myself pregnant in the midst of that. It brings on a whole new set of trials. In the beginning I would have taken him … Continue reading

Finding Balance in the Unbalance

As a single parent you may feel like your life is in utter chaos about 90% of the time. You are running from one thing to the next all day long, you hardly have time to take a shower in the morning, let alone brush your teeth. You are doing the work of two, so naturally you have a lot on your plate at any given time during the day. There are always a million things to do; get up, get the kids ready for school, go to work, come home, make dinner, help kids with homework, give the kids … Continue reading

Finding Peace

When you are in the middle of a divorce you may feel as if you will never find peace again. Even though I knew without a doubt that my divorce was the right thing, my heart was still aching for what should have been. It was one of the darkest times in my life. I have never felt a pain so intense. I was afraid of what lay ahead for me and my son. It was a fear of the unknown. We had to start our lives all over again and I didn’t even know where to start. This was … Continue reading
