Is Your Fridge Eating Electricity?

Recently I was the delighted recipient of a new fridge and stove. I was delighted because our old fridge didn’t work very well and was so broken inside that a piece of ancient, jagged plexiglass was holding up our vegetables. In spite of the state of our old fridge, I must admit to feeling slightly guilty about getting a new one. I’ve never gotten a new fridge and stove before. I’ve always repaired the old ones. However, the fridge and stove were just barely usable and were getting to be beyond repair, even if we really, really wanted to repair … Continue reading

I Feel Guilty …

Last Friday night, I was the passenger in a car accident that involved getting slammed twice by a semi truck on black ice. I’m feeling so very blessed right now – I’m stiff and sore, my head hurts, and I have five ribs out, but it was my door that took the most impact, and by all logical standards, I should be dead. I have thanked God countless times in the last five days for my life. It’s been hard, though, to keep putting all this weight on my husband. My health this year has really been up and down, … Continue reading

Getting Rid of Guilt

Does guilt from breaking up your child’s family make you feel like you have to overcompensate? I think this happens to both custodial and non custodial parents. We all love our children so much we can’t help be feel like we need to make it up to them that their lives are not perfect. When I first got divorced I found myself taking Hailey out to eat at her favorite places, going to movies, buying her things that she really didn’t need. All to try to make things better. My poor, poor little girl, coming from a broken home, not … Continue reading

Getting Out of Debt: Extreme Couponing

My husband thinks I am obsessed with extreme couponing. I admit that I never actually saw the Extreme Couponing show. Nevertheless, I have been a crazy coupon lady, clipping grocery coupons and getting the best deals on groceries that I can find. I’ve always believed in coupons, but my dedication to using them had fallen off and become sporadic. I needed the focus of getting out of debt to really step up my game in order to reduce our grocery bill even more and to get out of debt. My goal is to actually come under the amount that we … Continue reading

Are We Getting Too Used to Marriage Scandals?

From Jon & Kate Gosselin (Plus Eight) to David Letterman, there is hardly a day that goes by without some little nugget of celebrity news that also includes a cheating spouse or some other assault against marriage. Remember Edwards or Sanford? Maybe not too much; we have already moved on from them. There might have been a time when we would have been shocked by such scandals, but today it is different. There is publicity (and not all of it negative) in a marriage scandal. Individuals can admit their mistake, get their fame, promote their book and move on, with … Continue reading

More on Runaway Brides

We were talking about Runaway Brides – Why Do They Flee? earlier today. We talked about cold feet and nervousness, but are those the only reasons why a bride might abandon her groom at the altar? I remember during my wedding preparations, all the hoopla was getting to me and I shared the story of when one of the coordinators approached me and told me that if I wanted to call it off, now was the time before we approached the actual area for the ceremony. The question flabbergasted me then and amuses me now. A wedding is a rite … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Feb 26-Mar 4

It’s concise, quick, and handy. For your Pets Blog pleasure, here’s the breakdown of what Aimee and myself wrote about this past week: Monday, February 26 Pets need to keep warm in cold winter weather, too, and what better way than with a coat made just for them? Aimee interviewed Holly Glover, a dog-lover who turned her talent for sewing into Project Puppy Love, which ultimately warms up the lives of shelter dogs. Speaking of warming … the weather prompted me to take Murph for a walk, which sparked “What Kind of Dog Is That?”: Why I Love My Pound … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for Jan 20-26

Good morning, if you noticed a curious lack of the marriage blog week in review, I have to plead guilty. I wrote most of it, but yesterday, my daughter had a birthday party and we went out together to attend. It was a roller skating party and for those of you who follow my fitness blog posts, you know that my daughter and I have been roller-skating a great deal frequently, well we enjoyed ourselves roller-skating, but I was whipped after an hour and half on the skates and my legs felt like spaghetti. I’ll talk more about that in … Continue reading

The Importance of Listening

How could I possibly resist listening to this adorable angel? My daughter’s smile can light up a room, but her insanely long recaps of lunchroom drama between five girls, a shoe, a note and some other item that I have no earthly idea about, are far from illuminating. In fact, her convoluted conspectuses often make my ears burn, though the pain could actually be my brain frying, as I try to decipher what green socks and Eggplant Parmesan  have to do with how she fared on Friday’s spelling test. I try to make sense of it all, but I’m old. … Continue reading

Leftovers: Good Idea or Bad?

Growing up I hate leftovers and would do everything I could to avoid them. Now, as a mom of three, I’ve made my peace with leftovers and try to use them in creative ways. (Here are some ideas for Unconventional Leftovers.) But, are leftovers really a good idea? Let us take a look. Leftovers Can Make your Sick (BAD) Since I hate wasting money, I’m reluctant to toss out food. Taken too far, this could make me sick, when leftovers are too old or haven’t been stored properly. Getting leftovers refrigerated or frozen immediately, labeling leftovers with a date, and … Continue reading
