Balancing Blogging and Mothering

I squinted to make sense of scattered letters through the glare on my screen.  Focused attempts at deciphering HTML became distracted by bursts of giggling from the other side of my window.  Rejoicing from finally making a text box that scrolled, I missed a small excited voice asking me to “look at me”.  Dripping hair and sopping wet footsteps ran inside to beckon me to join their mini water park complete with a blow up monkey pool.  Promising just five more minutes I shooed away wet fingers from my computer.  Next I looked up and the time for sprinklers, popsicles, and water slides … Continue reading

Making the Most of What You Have

I recently read a book where the author was sharing her experience of moving the family from what was their “white picket fence” home to a practically dilapidated one. It was met with a lot of anger from her teenage sons. She had torn them from the comforts of their home, friends and a familiar neighbor to the middle of nowhere. They were living in a house that could have almost been condemned. Then they decided to tear the whole thing down and build new. While they did that, they had to live with the grandparents for several months. Eventually … Continue reading

Spicing Up Holiday Memories

Confession: I just finished printing out all the photos I snapped on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Sure, Easter is right around the corner, but that’s how I roll these days. Typically, I let my pictures sit in my camera until I have a need to print them out. And by need I mean receiving a phone call from my mom (who happens to live 5,000 miles away) asking for pictures of her one and only granddaughter. With that kind of guilt motivating me, I was not only inspired to print out my holiday photos, but I also used them … Continue reading

Get Creative With Your Memories

How many photos did you snap of your Valentine’s Day celebration? Snap-happy parents likely have dozens of pictures of their little sweethearts bouncing off the walls after ingesting hardy helpings of chocolate hearts. In addition, there are probably many couples, who took advantage of the holiday to seal the deal on their relationship, or at least make the next step from dating to engagement. So, what should you do with all those amazing memories? You could display them in a digital frame, keep them in your phone for eternity, print them out and add them to a scrapbook, or select … Continue reading

Making Valentine’s Day Simple

Valentine’s Day was definitely a family affair for me. Of course, my daughter does have a boyfriend, so she received some extra gifts. But for the most part we made this a family occasion. I’m not the “romantic” type when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Actually, I’m not very romantic at any other time either. I am more about loving on my whole family for this holiday. So when everyone woke up in the morning, there was a card and candy waiting for them. I got the humongous-sized Hershey bars for my children and Swedish Fish for my husband. But … Continue reading

Making Thanksgiving Memories

For kids, Thanksgiving pales in comparison to holidays in which they get to unwrap more than just some silverware from a cloth napkin. In fact, for some youngsters Turkey Day can be downright boring. Save for stuffing herself with bird and her favorite pumpkin pie, my 7-year-old sees the holiday as simply the day before she can start using her red Sharpie to countdown to Christmas on the calendar. Of course, having whiny kids underfoot while trying to prepare a feast for 20 is no picnic for parents either. This is why it pays to be prepared. Keeping children entertained … Continue reading

Making Fall Memories

As a single mom I’m always trying to find fun things to do with my daughter on a very limited budget. Fall is the perfect time to get outside. Nature walks are fun and educational. Let your little ones collect leaves and pine cones and other things they find. When you get home you can research the leaves on the internet and find out what kind of leaves they are and find some fun facts about that type of tree. Once you are finished learning all you can about your find let the kids make a collage with the treasures … Continue reading

Save While Scrapping Summer Memories

Summer is primetime for beach-themed scrapbooks. Scrapbook shops and craft stores are filled to the gills with seasonal embellishments designed to spice up seasonal spreads. From beach umbrellas and palm tree stickers to bikini die cuts and tropical libation-shaped rubber stamps, there is no shortage of beach-themed frills to add to page designs. However, if you are short on cash, then stocking up on the aforementioned embellishments may not be possible. Fortunately, you don’t have to dig too deep to find unique touches to add to your summer beach scrapbook. Rather, you just need to exercise some creativity and you … Continue reading

Making Summer Memories

Time is ticking for work-at-home moms, who desperately try to generate an income in the hours that their children are in school. In a few short days, summer vacation will be here and routines and schedules will be replaced with utter chaos. Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little… or not. In any event, as we kick-off the Memorial Day weekend, I thought it would be apropos to remind overworked and underappreciated parents that your kid’s childhood is disappearing right before your eyes. Soon that chubby baby will be a terrible two-year-old, who morphs into a sassy six-year-old, and then … Continue reading

Easter Memories

Yesterday I enjoyed a wonderful Easter lunch with my mother and a great Easter dinner with my aunts, uncles, cousins, and others. As I ate my way through the day, I made a few connections between the things that I was eating and some stories from my family history. I have written these connections down in my family history notebook, so that some day I can share this “slice of family history” with my son. The first family history food story involves my mother’s meatballs and sauce. My mother served us meatballs and sauce for lunch. I knew that she … Continue reading
