Katie Holmes’ New $43K Makeover and an Unexpected Hollywood Miracle

Recession? What recession? While the rest of the world (or at least us non-Hollywood types) is pinching pennies in these tough economic times, Tom Cruise’s wife is spending like there’s no tomorrow. Then again, maybe, Katie Holmes’ $43,000 makeover is just what the economy needs to help stimulate it. It’s just too bad she couldn’t drop the dough in her home country. According to reports, Holmes new longer do comes courtesy of some talented hair stylists in Japan. The UK’s Daily Mail claims Holmes shelled out £30,000 – which at today’s exchange rate comes out to more than $43,000 – … Continue reading

30 Minute Home Makeover

Have you ever watched the popular Food Network program “30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray?” On the show perky hostess Rachael Ray shows you how to whip up a delicious meal in less than a half hour. The rationale: the quicker you can get the food on the table, the more time you will have to spend with your family and friends. I thought about this concept the other day when my husband called to say that he was bringing a colleague home to review a project he was working on. The good news: He actually called before showing up. … Continue reading

Realistic Splurges

I recently read an article about things that moms should splurge on. I eagerly read it, I’m always looking for ways to splurge without feeling guilty and breaking the bank. Unfortunately this list was for married moms or at least moms in a better financial position than most single moms. It was great advice but really didn’t apply to me. One of the suggestions was a really nice, all purpose purse. Since Hailey started school my purse is more function than fashion, after all, kids backpacks aren’t cheap and have to be replaced fairly often so there goes the money … Continue reading

Can’t Win for Losing

My daughter’s second grade teacher has come up with a novel way to teach kids about losing gracefully. And it’s killing me. Each day, just minutes before dismissal, the teacher pulls a name from a hat. If the child, whose name is pulled has behaved that day, he or she is awarded a small prize, be it a bookmark, a key chain or sports trading cards. But here’s the catch: Once you win a prize your name is placed back into the hat and you are eligible to win the next day, and the next, and the next. Basically, the … Continue reading

Time for a Little Pampering

As single moms we are always putting our children first, but sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves too. Everybody knows that taking on the responsibilities of a single parent can be overwhelming. It takes a toll on every aspect of your life. After a while you just get burned out. When you start feeling like you’re on the verge of breaking down take a little time out to pamper yourself. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Yeah right, I’m a single mom. I don’t have the time or the money to pamper myself!” I’ve been there, I know … Continue reading

No More Chocolate for Breakfast

It’s been quite a summer for my soon-to-be second grader. In less than two weeks her days spent biking until sunset, rolling out of bed at eight (hey, don’t knock it; sleeping until 8 a.m. is a major accomplishment around here), and eating chocolate for breakfast are over. And by over I mean O-VAH! Let me clarify by saying that my kid has not spent the summer scarfing down brownies and Baby Ruth bars in lieu of oatmeal, oranges and other healthy breakfast foods. Rather, she has been getting away with noshing on chocolate chip pancakes, double chocolate muffins and … Continue reading

Kids’ Meals for Parents

I’ve been known to down a Happy Meal or two since becoming a mom. However, consuming leftover fries and soggy chicken nuggets with mini teeth marks dotting the surface, has more to do with not wanting to waste food and money than with a personal preference for fast food kids’ meals. Quite honestly, I despise kids’ meals. And I could care less about Twilight. Nice to finally get that off my chest. So how is it that I am able to confess my distaste for two seemingly unrelated pop culture phenomenons in a single blog? Five words: Burger King Eclipse … Continue reading

Post-birth Weight Loss and its Psychological Impact

I read an interesting article recently about new mothers and their struggle to regain their figures after childbirth. Actually, it was more sad than interesting. The article told the story of a 37-year-old woman who had given birth to her second child and immediately started a five-day-a-week gym regime. This woman fairly quickly regained her figure. But alas there still persisted those elusive silvery stretch marks and she thought that things had sagged a little as well, Anyway, the exercising hadn’t given her back a 25-year old body. But why did she think it should? And why does she feel … Continue reading

Where Are Max and Ruby’s Parents?

“Is Ruby Max’s mommy?” asked my 5-year-old, as we watched yet another episode of the animated Nick Jr. series, “Max and Ruby.” “No, she’s his big sister,” I replied. “Then, where’s their parents?” she retorted. It’s a question that has launched a thousand ships… okay, the vessels may still be in port, but the subject has apparently bothered enough people that there are now multiple Facebook pages dedicated to answering the question every parent (who has ever had to sit through more than one episode of the preschool series) has asked themselves: “Where are Max and Ruby’s parents?” I’ve pondered … Continue reading

What Parents Put Up With

And the Miley song was on And the Miley song was on And the Miley song was on… and on… and on… and on… And I thought the freakin’ fish song was bad. I stand corrected. Listening to Miley Cyrus’ hit song “Party In The U.S.A.” for the 10 billionth time is like getting hit in the head with a sledgehammer by manic railroad worker with good aim. The problem is my 5-year-old LOVES it. Which opens up an entirely different can of worms. For starters I’ve gone to great lengths to shield my baby from pop culture influences, including… … Continue reading
