Study: Kids Raised by Single Moms do as Well as Kids Raised by Two Parents

A study that was published by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology found that children of single mothers are no more likely to suffer later in life than kids raised by a mother and a father “in terms of parent-child relationship or child development.” Researchers from the University of Amsterdam looked at 69 “single-mothers-by-choice.” By that, they meant women who knowingly chose to raise their child alone. The researchers also looked at 59 mothers from heterosexual two-parent families. All of the parents in the study had children between the ages of 1.5 years of age and 6 years … Continue reading

Moms Helping Moms

I am so impressed with the generosity of complete strangers in one woman’s life today. As single mothers we can definitely empathize with others who are struggling to support their children. Whether you are in the midst of your own battle or have since recovered and gotten back on your feet, you can feel for the other women out there that are struggling to provide the necessities for their children. You know how hard it is to admit that you need help, and actually asking for it is even harder, but when the circumstances are dire enough, you are left … Continue reading

Celebrity Moms Adopt – Part 1

A few famous celebrity moms have recently adopted children. They are all at different stages in their life – one is married, one is in a same-sex relationship, and one is a single mother. Actress Katherine Heigl said adoption was always a part of her family plan, even as a little girl. Maybe that’s because she came from a family that adopted. Heigl grew up with her sister Meg, who was adopted from Korea three years before Heigl was born. She has said in interviews that she always wanted a family that resembled the one in which she grew up. … Continue reading

Moms Stink at Money Matters

Hey, I’m just the messenger. Personally, I think most moms rock at finances, but according to the gurus at LearnVest (a personal finance website for women), most women with kids fall short when it comes to making wise financial decisions. And why do the brainiacs at LearnVest think moms stink when it comes to handling money? We’re. Too. Nice. Apparently, sugar and spice and everything nice is a very bad combo when it comes to money. LearnVest experts claim that because moms are “too nice” and “too nurturing” they end of falling into an abyss of money problems. Competition is … Continue reading

Special Moms of Special Kids

Mother’s Day is a good time to do a shout-out to all the moms of children who have special needs. Parenting can be difficult, and it can also be rewarding. It has been said that parents of kids who have special needs have a more extreme version of parenting. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! Let’s face it: moms do a lot! This is not to say that dads don’t contribute, because they do. Often, though it is the mothers who take on the biggest part of parenting. A study found that parents of children who have autism face … Continue reading

Cars for Moms

It is so refreshing when people in the community come together to lift each other’s burdens. There is a non-profit organization in my home town, here in Utah, that has decided to reach out to single mothers in our area. Cars for Moms was founded by John Doxey when his sister’s husband was killed in a tragic car accident, leaving her alone to care for seven children and one on the way. Since that experience Doxey has become passionate about helping single mothers in the area. People from all over the city have come together to donate their time and … Continue reading

Happy Helping Husbands

Today I took my kids, including my newest addition, to story time at the public library. My oldest son loves it. I frequently meet other moms there and get a chance to get out of the house and feel a little “normal”. Or at least, as normal as I can with a new baby around. Today I sat next to a Mom and we started chatting. She had 4 kids (twins in the middle) and her youngest was still a baby, although starting to toddle around. During the conversation, she said that she and her husband were going through a … Continue reading

Helping At School

Sometimes it seems that schools and such either forget that there are single moms in the world, or they don’t care. When Hailey was in school all of her parent teacher conferences were during the day and any choir performances or the like were during the day as well. When she qualified for the gifted and talented program, I was excited, until I found that she would need to attend another school, ten miles away and they didn’t provide transportation. Needless to say, Hailey didn’t get to go to that school. I understand that teachers work during the day, but … Continue reading

Cars For Moms

This time of year you hear so many stories about charities and other organizations helping people. It’s wonderful when people go out of their way to help each other. It’s especially wonderful when single moms are the recipients of the help but it’s important to remember, people are in need all year, not just at the holidays. John Doxey founded Cars for Moms- in an effort to help single mothers who are in need of transportation. He founded this nonprofit after his sister’s husband was killed in a freeway accident while she was pregnant with her eighth child. Suddenly his … Continue reading
