My Blessing in Disguise

Tomorrow would have marked my 4th anniversary with my ex-husband. It’s hard to remember what life was even like back then, it seems a lifetime ago. I remember feeling in the pit of my stomach that I was making the biggest mistake of my life as I walked down the aisle. My head knew things weren’t going to work, but my heart was too stubborn to listen and convinced me to go through with it. I so desperately wanted a “happily ever after family.” I wanted my son to grow up with both of his parents living under the same … Continue reading

My Ex in Disguise

Some days I wonder if there are any good men in the world. I’m sure plenty of you have wondered the same thing from time to time. It seems like there are a million bad ones and every once in a while a good one gets thrown into the mix. Needless to say I’ve dated a few bad apples since my divorce. For some reason I tend to go for men who are very much like my ex husband. Maybe it’s just what I’m used to. When I had been divorced for about six months I met a guy who … Continue reading

Experimenting with New Products

I’m a stickers, stamps and die cut kind of scrapper. For years I rarely strayed from my standard combo. My method was safe, effective and looked good enough for me. Then, I was introduced to the magic of vellum and my layouts starting taking on a whole new dimension. So, yes, there are downsides of refusing to experiment with new or new-to-you scrapbook embellishments and accessories. For starters, you simply don’t know how much better your page designs can look if you are too afraid to incorporate different items into your repertoire. My reluctance to work with vellum stemmed from … Continue reading

Is Homeschool Right for My Family?

Today we have more options than ever before when it comes to finding the best education for our children. Charter schools are being built all over the nation, private schools have gained in popularity over the years, and home school is becoming less of a frightening thought and more of a “thing to do.” But far from being a fad that will go out of style, this alternative is gaining long-term support, and more and more families are choosing this method of schooling for their own families. But how do you make the right choice for your children? I suggest … Continue reading

Home School Blogger Intro

I started as a home schooling blogger on Families.com about a month ago. My introduction post is a little overdue, but I wanted to share with others a bit about myself and my background as a home schooling single mother. My two oldest daughters went to public school all the way through high school. A move to a rough area of Baltimore had me quickly pulling my three youngest out of school and home schooling them myself. It was a decision I wish I had made with my older girls. Live and learn though, right? For the most part I … Continue reading

My Mini Zoo – New Pet Blogger Intro

As a new pet blogger here at Families.com I felt I should write an introduction post and share the story of my mini-zoo with everyone. I’ve had pets ever since I could remember. In fact, none of my homes have felt complete unless there was at least one four-legged furry critter running around. About ten years ago this love for all things feathered, furry or finned hit a high point. My second daughter worked at Petsmart at the time so she always had some tale of woe about a guinea pig, hamster, snake, fish, or other animal that had been … Continue reading

Overdue Intro From A New SP Blogger

Yes, my introduction is long overdue. As one of the new Single Parenting bloggers, I’ve wanted to say hello to Jacky Gamble who’s another SP blogger, and to everyone here at Families.com, but I’ve been so intently focused on writing informative pieces that this kept slipping my mind. Here I am at last. I’ve been a single parent for about 7 years now. After my second divorce I truly felt it was better to go it alone with my five daughters. It seemed apparent that I hadn’t chosen husbands wisely, so it was high time for me to get out … Continue reading

Home Schooling – A Blessing In Disguise

When people find out that my three youngest girls were all home schooled they look at me with shock and admiration. Then, they always ask why I decided to do it. My answers are probably similar to many other home schooling parents, even if we all have our unique reasons and ways of handling things. We do it because we believe in doing the best for our children. My personal reason for choosing to pull my two third graders out of public school, and never let my youngest step foot in a classroom, was simply because I felt I was … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for March 3-9

Aimee and I were busy beavers last week. In case you were too and missed any of our articles, here’s our Week in Review recap for your cheating (er, I mean catching up) pleasure… Monday, March 3 In Aimee’s first Diary of a Cat Care B&B entry for the week, she discussed her bulletin board she’s assumed responsibility for and asked for suggestions. Me and my crew presented “The Case of Who Cut the Cheese” after a stinky episode in our house Friday night. Aimee detailed the four most common worms in pets. Tuesday, March 4 Have you ever wondered … Continue reading

Animals in Historical Mysteries: An Interview with Mary Reed (and Eric Mayer)

Another author who recently humored my request for an interview is Mary Reed, who co-authors the John the Eunuch series with Eric Mayer. And actually I got double my money this go around because this dynamic duo is also a married one as well. I’m going to keep my intro short because in reading their answers you’ll come to see how much they not only love animals (especially cats), but also use animals in their work and have a lot of fun with it. Courtney Mroch: What kind of things do you write about? Mary Reed/Eric Mayer: We write historical … Continue reading
