Open Arms

An interesting thing happened today. As I was driving to pick up Logan from his dad’s I was feeling a bit of anxiety. The family was celebrating his little brother’s birthday so the entire family was gathered at the house. I hadn’t seen the majority of them since the divorce and was worried about how everyone would react to my being there to pick up Logan. It had the potential to be a very awkward situation. Instead they welcomed me with open arms. They each gave me a big hug and asked how I was doing and how things were … Continue reading

Prudy’s Problem (and how she solved it) – Carey Armstrong-Ellis

Reading “Prudy’s Problem” reminds me so much of my own children – they can’t seem to throw anything away! Prudy is an ordinary girl who wants to do all the things her friends do. And like most children, Prudy is a collector. There’s just one problem – Prudy collects everything. Some of her friends collect butterflies, or stamps, or tin foil. So does Prudy. But she also collects rocks, feathers, leaves, twigs, dead bugs, old flowers, and even fungi. She won’t throw away any picture she’s drawn, and she has over six hundred stuffed animals. She has scarves, pencils, fabric … Continue reading

Christmas Safety Tips for Parents of Toddlers

Everyone wants to have their holiday vacation be a pleasant one. Ideally, everyone in your family should be warm, safe, and happy. One way to help ensure a merry Christmas is to follow some of these holiday safety tips. These are geared for new parents and for parents who have small children. Toddlers will grab trees. Many parents make use of a playpen from time to time. Some parents use the playpen as an easy place for their toddler to take a nap. Others put their toddler safely into the playpen so they can quickly run to the bathroom or … Continue reading

Yoga Positions for Early Labor

The other day my doula visited our home to show us some techniques we’ll use for pain management during early labor.  Our goal is to do as much of the labor at home as possible – we’re more comfortable at home, and thus more likely to be relaxed here – and so these are some moves and positions Jon and I can do to help me get through the pain. If you get a book like The Birth Partner or other books about/that have sections on natural childbirth, these positions might be familiar to you.  I don’t know exactly what they’re … Continue reading

UP

The acquisition of language skills in infants is more than a little bit difficult to predict.  Babies develop in a wide and varying “normal” range.  While some vowel sounds and simple consonant sounds seemed to be mastered in baby babble,  it is nearly impossible to determine when an infant is going to use those sounds to communicate in words with deliberation. In an effort to aid communication with our babies, my husband and I introduced to our children at around six months an array of simple signs. The hope was that the combination of sounds and the signs would helps … Continue reading

Baby Loves

I am a very lovey dovey kind of Mom. I hug and kiss on my kids (especially when they’re babies) all the time! So, one of my favorite things is when they start to “give loves” back to you. It is the best. Well, I first noticed my baby giving loves to a stuffed animal the other day when my niece was visiting. She gave him a stuffed animal, and he put it up next to his face and snuggled it between his head and his shoulder. It was adorable. One of the best feelings is when they can wrap … Continue reading

New Year’s Eve Money Savers

Welcoming 2013 is cause for celebration.  However, if you plan to party with a house full of parents and children, a New Year’s Eve shindig has the potential to put huge dent in your wallet. Fortunately, there are ways you can preserve your family’s budget, so that you don’t start 2013 in a financial pit: Fancy Cup Tags:  Fancy doesn’t have to mean expensive.  One way to reduce the amount of money you spend on cups for a New Year’s party is to attach a pretty tag to each one.  Doing so will identify the cup’s owner and eliminate the … Continue reading

Heart. Broken.

The holidays will never, ever be the same for the families whose loved ones were tragically gunned down yesterday in Connecticut. Life will never be the same for them. If you are a parent, life is also likely different for you following Friday’s mass murder madness. It can be. It should be. That is, if you are able to gain perspective from the senseless act of violence. It’s one of life’s cruelest ironies:  To gain perspective we must often lose something incredibly precious. In the case of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, more than two dozen families lost their … Continue reading
