The Forbidden Vacation

When was the last time you took a vacation without your kids? Or, more importantly, when was the last time you announced to others that you were planning to take a trip sans munchkins? Polls show that very few parents jet-off on holidays minus the kiddos. What’s more, a huge chunk of the moms and dads, who do book a tropical escape alone, are not willing to freely reveal their plans. What are they afraid of? That people will think they are selfish for enjoying time at a fab vacation destination without their children. Or, perhaps, they are afraid of … Continue reading

Single-Parent Vacation?

This summer Logan and I desperately needed a vacation. We were planning on going on a little camping trip for a few days, but I wasn’t sure how to pull that off with just the two of us. Would I be able to get the tent up with the not so helpful help of a three year old? What if I couldn’t get a fire started? Would Logan be bored out of his mind just camping with Mom? Needless to say the camping trip didn’t happen. So we decided that we wanted to make the 14 hour drive to Oregon … Continue reading

Single Parent Travel: Planning a Vacation on a Budget

So you want to take a vacation with just you and your kid(s)? The first question you need to ask yourself is where you will go. Do you want to visit the beach? A major historical attraction? A city? Are in interested in going on a trip that is just for single parents? Will you be traveling near or far? If you’re like me, a major factor in deciding where you will vacation is dependent upon your budget. As single parents, we often do not have a lot of “extra” money for things like vacations to exotic locations. We are … Continue reading

Successful Vacation Dieting

Going on vacation is something that everyone looks forward to. However, if you are dieting it can be difficult to maintain your dieting regime and at the same time treat yourself to a little extra extravagance when it comes to mealtime. Here are some suggestions to help you make it through your vacation and still lose a pound or two: First of all, do not expect to lose as much as you would when you are at home and following your normal, every day schedule. Accepting this will help you not to become too discouraged when you get back home … Continue reading

Single Parents and That Long Winter Break

Just this week I was listening to a colleague talk about the struggle of trying to figure out what to do with a preschooler during the long winter break from school. This is someone who has a spouse and just one child and they are STILL struggling and juggling trying to keep the child care covered this time of year. While I smiled, I remembered my own history of three children, my own single parent status, and that long 2 ½ week winter break… Time off from school can really be tough on a single parent. We have to try … Continue reading

Sharing and Coordinating Vacations

For those of us single parents who also have another parent in the picture, coordination and sharing can be the “names of the game”—we are called upon to coordinate all sorts of things between two households (or more) and find a way to make sure our kids are able to stay in contact with various relatives, and spend leisure time with both parents and both families. Since summer time can mean vacation time, this means coordinating vacations and that can take some effort… The upside of the two households is that kids can get double the vacations. This is how … Continue reading

Single Parent Vacations: Vacationing at Home

When we live in an area for any amount of time, we are usually so busy working and taking care of our family and homes that we don’t see all the reasons it would be a great place to take a vacation. Even when we do see the reasons, we don’t usually get a chance to visit the places that could be so much fun. That’s why staying where you are would be a great place to take your first single parent vacation. Now I’m not saying stay home, though you do have that option, I wouldn’t suggest it. If … Continue reading

Single Parent Vacations

As I said in Travels as a Single Parent, traveling as a single parent is not always easy, but it can be very enjoyable. I enjoyed traveling enough that I am actually considering vacations. The idea of planning a vacation as a single parent has always seemed a daunting task to me; however, now that I did travel with my son, I want to look into it more. When planning a vacation, you have to plan a lot, and if anything goes awry, it could amount to some big troubles. You have to plan where you are going to stay, … Continue reading

Travels as a Single Parent

I’ve been gone since May 31st visiting my niece at Craig Hospital in Colorado, thus the lack of post, and my apologies for that. This is the first time I’ve actually “traveled” since I had my son. I’ve gone to visit friends a state away, and relatives a state or two away always driving there, but not actually traveling. Let me tell you, traveling, especially as a single parent, is not the same. It is not always easy, but it can be enjoyable. I went on two vacations before I had my son. Once to Los Angeles, CA., and once … Continue reading
