Home Sweet Home

This past Monday I came back to my home in Wisconsin after a trip to Texas. My family went to see my 18-year-old son’s graduation from basic training with the Air Force. The eight weeks he was gone seemed to stretch on forever. But in the days leading up to the trip, I had so much on my mind in the way of packing and planning, that it diverted my thoughts at least somewhat. One of the goals that I had for this trip was to come back home to a clean house. I didn’t want to leave it in … Continue reading

When a Child Leaves Home

I dare say one of the most painful things to experience as a mom is a child leaving the home. My son left last week for basic training with the Air Force in Texas, nearly a thousand miles from home. Even taking the military out of the equation, the absence of a child is something you really can’t prepare for. You know it is going to happen, you plan for it to happen but then reality sets in and how you thought you would feel and handle it is so different. It has been a struggle to try and get … Continue reading

Homemade Chinese New Year’s Fun

With less than 48 hours until the official debut of the Year of the Dragon, many communities are getting a jump-start this weekend by hosting parades, festivals and firework displays. Chinese New Year is a festive holiday that celebrates family, friends and new beginnings. If you don’t live near a city that is commemorating the event with special activities, then host your own party. Gather the kids, hang up some red streamers and gold balloons, and then get busy in the kitchen whipping up some simple Chinese dishes, including: HOMEMADE FORTUNE COOKIES Ingredients: 1 egg white Dash of vanilla extract … Continue reading

Diary of a Work At Home Mom Part 13

The life of a work-at-home mom is never boring, and today is no exception. Last night, hurricane Irene knocked out our electricity around 5PM and there’s no telling when it will come back on. Fortunately, that is all that happened at my house. Unfortunately, many people with homes and businesses near the rivers of Vermont did not fare so well and I hope that they are able to recover from their losses. Not having electricity sure takes some things off of the to-do list, like dishes and laundry. Those things will pile up and be waiting for me when the … Continue reading

Gary Coleman’s Final Wishes and Another Will Pops Up

It seems as if this story will never end. This week, we learned of Gary Coleman’s final wishes – at least for his funeral. One of the many wills that has popped up since the actor’s death was filed Tuesday in Provo, Utah. The two-page will read that Gary wished to be cremated, but his funeral wishes were far sadder. He stated that only “those who have no financial ties to me and who can look each other in the eyes and say they really cared personally for Gary Coleman” be allowed at the wake. It is not known if … Continue reading

Leaving a Trail

Call it a trail of tears or a trail of crumbs, but whatever it is—I have spent nearly twenty years following that trail of STUFF that kids leave as they move from one end of the house to the other—shoes, balled up wads of dirty socks, book bags, papers, sweatshirts, dishes, pencils, cd cases and game cartons—you name it; whatever any one of my kids might have in their hands one moment, will surely be left by the wayside as the move from point A to point B… When the kids were younger, I used to keep a basket at … Continue reading

What I Love About My Home-Business—I Don’t Have to Do Co-workers’ Dirty Dishes!

When I was writing yesterday about what a pleasure it is to not have to deal with crabby and moody coworkers when I am working at home, I couldn’t help but start thinking about other coworker “stuff” that I do not miss from the more traditional job—mainly having to deal with other people’s dirty dishes in the lunch or break room! That was one of those things I never really understood about human behavior when I was working the full time jobs—those individuals who left their dirty dishes and coffee cups in the sink. Some people did it under the … Continue reading

Perhaps I am an expert in Homeschooling

When I first started this job as homeschool blogger for families.com, I wrote a post entitled, Disclaimer, I am hardly an expert in education. Meanwhile, in the light of all of the questions I find myself answering of late, I am realizing that I just might be an expert in homeschooling. Considering the fact that I have researched and studied all things homeschooling for the past four plus years, one could say I have the equivalent of a Bachelors degree in homeschooling (with a minor in education). Think about it. In four years of on the job homeschooling, researching the … Continue reading
