Going to School with Kids

I have been asked several times over the last year how I could possibly manage to continue going to school with a child all while parenting alone. “How do you have time to do homework?” “Who watches your son for you?” “How do you find time to study?” “How do you keep your grades up?” All questions that have continued to come up time and time again. For the record, it hasn’t been an easy task, but here are some things that may help you attempt the college journey as a single mother. First off, don’t forget to check out … Continue reading

I Couldn’t Do It Without Help

I am not one to get involved in politics. I have my own personal political views, but I tend to keep them to myself because I hate the contention it brings. However, some family members of mine got into a political debate and I couldn’t help but put my two cents in simply because it affects us as single mothers. There is a woman running for congress here in Utah who has said that she thinks that we should do away with all financial aid in regard to education. As a single mother this is frightening for me. I can … Continue reading

A Week of Runny Noses

The past week has been a struggle. It seems to me that it would be difficult for any parent to care for a sick child. The child doesn’t feel well and is irritable and sad. It is inconvenient for moms to be sick. Moms do a lot in any household and being sick can be a struggle. So, I don’t see how it is really fair that any single mom should get sick. I really don’t think it is fair for a single mom and her toddler to be sick. Yet, this happened to me. It started out on Saturday … Continue reading

Education: Making Choices for Your Family

Sometimes the choices we have to make in life are not always good ones, but essential. Sometimes there is no other way. Does going back to school fit into your plans? Probably not. You are a single parent. You do not have time for school, but how much money do you bring into the household? Do you have enough earning potential to take care of your family? I am sure like most of us, it is lacking. Sure, you get by, but just by the skin of your teeth. Maybe you want to go back to school just for you … Continue reading

Single Parent: Back to School

As I said in I’m Not Sorry, I’m Thankful I went back to school shortly after I became a single parent. I honestly don’t think I would have if I had not become one, and when I did, I wished that I would have done it prior to becoming one. Partly because I love learning so I would have liked to spend more time in school. Mostly because going to school and being a single parent is one of the hardest things to do. Now I’m sure if Jonathan were older or if I didn’t homeschool it may be easier, … Continue reading

Single Moms – Improving the Financial Picture

Most single moms will agree that the number one challenge has to do with money. Unfortunately, studies still show that while the gap of income between men and women is getting closer, men still make more money than women do for the same job. Going from a two-income family down to one, and being the individual who makes less can be tough. Obviously, some compromises have to be made and at first, you might feel discouraged and even defeated. Remember, just because things start out financially bumpy does not mean they have to remain that way. To boost your financial … Continue reading

Choose a Good Calendar for Your Hectic Schedule

Being a single parent can get hectic at times. You have work, daycare, your school, their school, your homework, their homework, bills, appointments, activities, school programs, shared custody or visitation, birthdays, alone time and a lot more. Some days you wonder how you are going to do it all. There are a lot of things and ideas out there that can help you get through days like this. I won’t be able to fit all of them into one blog, because it would just get way too long, so I am going to break this up into several different blogs. … Continue reading

Your Local Junior College – A Hidden Treasure

When I was in high school, I often heard other students say they couldn’t wait until they graduated. Simply put, they were tired of school. These desperate cries grew even louder in college. Most of my fellow classmates could hardly wait until they had finished school and could enter the workforce. I often wonder if they feel the same way now. I must admit that I, too, was one of those people who was eager to finish the day to day stress of school and wanted to hurry up and obtain a career that I actually liked. Now that I … Continue reading

Finding a College to Fit Your Needs as a Single parent

Currently I am half way through completing my Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology leading to licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Tonight begins my ninth class. The way my school schedule works is that I attend school two nights per week for four weeks, then move on to the next class. It is intense and a lot of work but I get done quicker and am able to attend full-time and also work full-time. I completed my Bachelor degree just last year at the age of twenty-nine. I moved to California from Arizona at the age of eighteen and … Continue reading

Single Moms Going Back to School – Part One

I remember after going through a divorce, feeling as if something were missing. Sure, I was still a great mom to my kids and I worked full-time but I also remember thinking I wanted to do something so I could provide a better life not just for my kids but myself too. At first, I thought the idea of going back to school was ridiculous. After all, I had concerns over having time, being able to afford extra daycare and not spending quality time with my children – and so on. What I discovered is that the opportunities were outstanding … Continue reading
