Save on Trips to the Sunshine State

Thanks to HGTV’s newest show “My Yard Goes Disney,” my 6-year-old has started a whining campaign to get us to visit the House of Mouse this summer. Unfortunately, unless we win a spot on HGTV’s other smash hit “House Hunters on Vacation,” I highly doubt that will be shaking our tail feathers with Donald and crew before the start of the new school year. I know this because, like many parents, I want to make all my child’s dreams come true, so I crunched the numbers to see if we could afford to roam Disney’s Animal Kingdom, stay at Disney’s … Continue reading

This post discusses some of the many places that offer vacations that have been designed for single parents and their children. Family Meetings

Family meetings are times for families to come together and discuss issues that affect the household. Topics can be about anything, from school, to chores, to vacation planning. You could also hold meetings just as a way to ensure that your family spends time together on a regular basis, with no agenda to the meetings at all. Family meetings are a great way to promote open discussion between yourself and your children. Children whose families engage in regular family meetings are less likely to get into trouble, abuse drugs or alcohol, develop depression, or have poor self-esteem. Any member of … Continue reading

Summer Travel Tidbits: Roadkill, Reckless Driving and Record High Gas Prices

ROADKILL If you are planning to drive along Illinois highways this summer don’t expect the views to be very pleasant. Unless you enjoy staring at miles and miles of roadkill, you will likely find the drive somewhat… well… gross. According to the state’s transportation department, it simply doesn’t have enough money to pick up as much roadkill as it normally does this time of year because it spent too much of its budget during the winter months. Representatives from IDOT say they spent more than twice the allotted $40 million to clear ice and snow during last winter’s severe storms … Continue reading

Obviously, one of the main benefits is having other single adults, both men and women, with who to enjoy time. Keep in mind that many single parent vacations to the Caribbean are set-up so children can come along. However, these trips also offer top … Continue reading

Planning Vacation as a Single Parent

There is nothing better than a family vacation but for millions of people, “family” is simply one parent and children. If you find yourself in this situation, you are not alone. I remember taking my kids on many vacations just them and me. With the high rate of divorce and some families going through the death of a spouse, single parent vacations are also growing in numbers. Most importantly, just because you are a single parent does not mean you should not take the kids on vacation. Keep in mind, vacation does not have to be two weeks in Paris. … Continue reading
