Single Parenting: A Single Parent Is.........

by Angel Lynn Diamond | More from this Blogger

The other day I had an interesting conversation with someone regarding single parenting. We were talking about our kids and our discussion led to single parenting. She said that even though she was married and had been all of her life, her life was that of a single parent. Even though I think the world of this person, this disturbed me. She said that even though she had a spouse that lived with her that he was not involved in any parenting issues. Her marriage, she stated, was wonderful, but her children were more apt to come to her rather than their father for any type of issue, including their basic care.

Why did this bother me so? I thought about it for a while and realized why. She just did not understand and I wanted her to for some reason. Maybe I wanted her to realize how fortunate she was.

Some people although they claim to understand about single parenting they just do not. I am not a single parent by choice. It is difficult and I am envious of those who have a whole family. They have been given a great blessing.

Even though your spouse may not be involved in any parenting issues, they are still there. They are present in the household. Theirs is a two-parent household. They are there financially, which is a major difference all in itself. They are there for the holidays. They are there in times of a major crisis. They are there at nighttime. You are not all alone. Maybe they do not take part in any disciplining issues, but their presence is still known. If it is a father that does not involve himself in these issues, the kids know that he is still there.

Being a single parent, you are truly alone. There is no source of back up or comfort in your lives. There is no shoulder to lean on when things get tough. There are two incomes, two pair of hands, and someone that cares in some way. That is the difference.

It is not that I wish single parenting on anyone. It is extremely difficult. Some people have no idea of just how difficult it really is. I just want people to realize that what they have is precious and to give thanks for having someone to share things with no matter how insignificant it may seem to be.
