Taking Care of Your Eyes

Those of us who operate our own home businesses do NOT have the benefit of a human resources department or health and safety committee to make sure that we are looking after our physical bodies during the work day. Unless we tend to things ourselves, concerns like ergonomics, how long we sit in one place, lighting, etc. can go unattended to. I know that I speak from personal experience when I confess that exhaustion and eye strain can be a reality for a hard-working home business owner! It has been relatively recently that I have started wearing glasses and being … Continue reading

Fending Off Job Offers

I was talking with a friend of mine recently who I hadn’t seen in a while–the last I had spoken with him, he was starting his own consulting business. He confessed that he had been lured away from his fledgling business by a tempting job offer and now was regretting that he hadn’t stuck it out just a while longer. I think this can be a hazard or a reality for many home business owners–it can be tough to stick to building a struggling home business when there is the promise of better pay and benefits (at least for the … Continue reading

Taking the Focus Off Ourselves for a While

Perhaps because I write so much about what is going on in my own little world, I often feel like I get pretty myopic. As a single parent, I might also be hypersensitive about myself and my life because I feel like I have to pay such close attention to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. That is probably why I think it can be so great to be able to let all that go for a while and focus on people and problems OUTSIDE my family and my little domestic scene. Getting out of my own world and … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog’s New Millenium

Good morning! Welcome to our 1,000th post here in the marriage blog and let me tell you, it feels so weird to say we’ve been here for a 1000 different entries tackling everything from wedding planning to problem solving to dating and more. It’s been a real pleasure for me to be writing for this topic for nearly a year now and to share it with such an awesome co-blogger as Sherry Holetzky. With that in mind, we thought we’d offer a small treat for our 1,000th blog and we interviewed each other. So without further ado, let me present … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog: Week in Review – Sept 23-29

Fitness Blog’s: The Week in Review Sept 23-29 It’s been a terrifically busy week here in the Fitness blog and you’d think after 10 months of talking about fitness, I’d be tired of it, but I’m far from that date. We’re winding September down and we’re heading into October. Be sure to check out the September End of the Month Fitness Goal Check today and be back here tomorrow to start our run on October fitness. We’re going to talk a lot about Women’s Fitness in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the meanwhile, here’s a review … Continue reading

Wreck-It Ralph Review

Disney’s done it again with “Wreck-It Ralph.” This is a movie anyone can love, and it’s definitely another one to which it would be great to bring your kids along. The central protagonist, Ralph, is actually a villain, not a hero. He’s the guy in an arcade game who wrecks a building, for the hero (and titular character in his game), Fix-It Felix, to repair. Ralph has spent 30 years as the villain, and that wouldn’t be so bad if at night, when the lights in the arcade go off and the denizens of the games go off the clock, … Continue reading

Stress is my Middle Name

What a night! Single parenting is always stressful, but tonight was one of those nights that I thought I might rip my hair out. I had so much to do and my list kept getting longer and longer as the night went on. Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around? When one thing gets crossed off inevitably something else goes on the list, all while your children quickly undo everything you just did. It’s hard to keep up with, especially if you are balancing work and school on top of that like so many of us are. I … Continue reading

“There’s a Hobo at School with a Knife!” More Adventures in Childhood Bipolar Disorder

My husband and I were faced with the horrific task of telling my stepdaughters that their mother, baby sister, and brother-to-be had all been killed in a terrible car accident. As we sat them down that morning, the look of concern on their faces was obvious. They knew something was terribly wrong, just by their father’s demeanor. He was a tough-guy police officer who rarely cried. Yet now he was racked with visible grief. It was hard for him to find the right words. How does a father gently break his daughters’ hearts? With his arms around them, he shared … Continue reading

Is it Really You that You’re Unhappy With?

In some cases, marriages go bad because one of the partners begins to identify and dwell on the faults of the other. It can be very easy to find faults and focus not them rather than look at the positive things that a person does. While in several of my articles I have discussed accepting the faults of the other person and how we cannot change our partner’s personality, I am going to take this article into a little direction. When thinking about the faults that you have found in your mate, have you ever considered yourself? There is no … Continue reading

An Affair Doesn’t Mean “The End”

It may be hard to accept the idea that when your spouse has an affair, it doesn’t have to mean the marriage is over. For most men or women, betrayal is a bitter pill to swallow. It’s hard on the person who’s cheated on. It’s hard on the person who cheated. But it’s hardest on the marriage as the couple tries to recover who they were before the cheating. An affair doesn’t mean a marriage is over, but it does indelibly change the marriage. Complications Relationship experts cite over and over that affairs are not about the sex. The reasons … Continue reading
