Why Kids and Smartphones Don’t Mix

No one said using a smartphone is a sure-fire way to avoid making stupid mistakes. I’ve covered the not-so wonderful side of technology in previous posts.  However, this latest gem goes beyond falling down manholes or setting expensive texting records. If you are a parent, you now have another reason to safeguard your smartphone when your kids are around. Paul Stoute is living proof that protecting your cellphone from little fingers is one of the smartest parenting moves you can make. The Oregon dad is the new owner of a vintage car, thanks to his toddler daughter’s cellphone skills. Or, … Continue reading

The Bedroom Phone

She may not have a television in her bedroom, but my 8-year-old does have a popular link to the outside world plugged into her wall—a telephone. Not a cellphone… a landline telephone. Initially, I put it in there for emergencies.  When my daughter was an infant, I used to nurse her in her room for hours, so I figured hooking up a corded phone in the corner of the room would be a good idea. We kick it old school around here. Though, I may be kicking myself very soon. Right now, my daughter has no desire to sit in … Continue reading

The Whopping Family Cell Phone Bill

Cell phones as we know them are only a few decades old, and yet it is hard to think about living without them, despite the fact that humankind survived centuries without cell phones. It isn’t unusual these days to be spending $250 or more a month for your family cell phones. In some families, the cell phone expense may be the second highest monthly bill, after the mortgage or the rent. Doing without other things, from eating out to dental care (in some cases) in order to afford cell phones has become the norm. How did things get so crazy? … Continue reading

Pack Your Bag It’s Time To Go

If you are getting close to your delivery date, it is time to pack your bag for the trip of a lifetime. Before you drag out your suitcase and start tossing in your sunscreen and beach blanket, I should tell you that it’s a different kind of trip. That all important trip to the hospital (if you are planning to give birth at a hospital) where you will give birth to your baby. In the interest of full disclosure, I must say that with both pregnancies I did not pack my bag for the hospital until right before I left. … Continue reading

Phone Manners Matter

One of my biggest pet peeves is watching a young child beg for his mom or dad’s attention when said parent is talking on a cellphone, and then getting swatted away as though he were a pesky mosquito. Granted, most of the time I view these incidents, my daughter and I are at a park, restaurant or other public place, and I don’t know who is on the other end of the phone call. However, I still don’t think it is appropriate for the parent to walk away from his or her child, as though they weren’t related, just so … Continue reading

Tethered To A Cell Phone

I don’t know how mothers did this single mom thing before cell phones. I’m tethered to mine and so is Hailey. I don’t know what I would do if I could not reach her at any time. Being a working single mother meant that Hailey has always been on her own a lot. Thanks to cell phones she could call me anytime she was frightened and I could call her anytime I just wanted to know she was ok. Hailey got her first phone when she was twelve. Lots of people told me that was too young but for us, … Continue reading

Time for Cell Phone?

In this day and age it seems like everyone has a cell phone, children and teenagers alike. I recently was student teaching in a sixth grade class at a local elementary school. Nearly all of the children had cell phones, and most of them were much nicer than mine. Children as young as kindergarten are feeling pressure to get a cell phone and cell phone companies are responding to their plight. They even have cell phones designed for toddlers now in case of an emergency. Cell phone companies such as Firefly Mobile have cell phones designed specifically for children’s needs … Continue reading

Mom’s On The Phone – Time to Cause Trouble

If you are a home – based professional who is also a stay at home parent, chances are that you sometimes have to take a business call when the children are present. It can be no small feat to keep your child or children safe, occupied, and content while you take even a short phone call. I take care of as many phone calls as I can during my two year old son’s nap time, but there are days when he does not nap and there are times when people call me and I must answer the phone. The following … Continue reading

Planning Ahead For Busy Times

Everyone knows the old saying, “when it rains, it pours”. When you have a home-based business, rain is a good thing. As the owner and operator of your home based business, you are also the one responsible for attracting clients and customers. This is known in the business world as being a rainmaker. Sometimes, your rainmaking activities produce a deluge of work. That is a beautiful thing – if you have a plan in place for handling a sudden increase in interest in your products or services. Here are a few tips for making sure that you do not get … Continue reading

Budgeting Apps for iPhone

It is that time again already, that time that comes around once every two years when my husband and I get to reevaluate the status of our cell phone plan and choose new phones. Of course, it is an exciting time but it is not all that exciting because it involves spending money. It is money that we must spend though because we have chosen to forego a land line and have just cell phones. We also do not have many options where we live for internet access – we could get it if we pay for a land line … Continue reading
