Synchronous Movement Helps With Bonding

Want to build a stronger bond with your toddler? One way to do that is to incorporate synchronous movement into your lives. Researchers have found that there is something about moving together, the same way, at the same time, that causes the bond between people to strengthen. It is time to play some music and dance with your toddler! Researchers at the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behavior at McMaster University did a study that involved 68 babies. Their study revealed that synchronous movement caused the babies to form social bonds with the person whom they shared the synchronous movement … Continue reading

Reasons to Remove Snow from Your Roof

Snow can be pretty, but it can also be problematic. Those who live in places that regularly get snow realize that they will have to remove snow from their cars and driveways. State Farm points out that that it is a good idea to take the time to remove the snow from the roof of your home, too. When I was really young, I remember a time when my family experienced a Midwestern blizzard. Snow piled up higher than I’d ever seen it before (or since). My father used a rake to knock snow from the roof. Once he cleared … Continue reading

Mom Removes Daughter with Leukemia from Hospital

A mother has removed her eleven year old daughter from a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. The child has leukemia. She also has a heart catheter in place, and could die if she doesn’t go back to the hospital soon. At the time I am writing this blog, police do not know where the child has been taken to. Leukemia is a serious condition. It is the cancer of the blood forming tissues in the body, including the bone marrow, and the lymphatic system. There are many types of leukemia, including some forms that are more common in children than in … Continue reading

Now’s the Time to Prune!

Deck the halls with loads of branches! It’s pruning time again. Actually, you can prune many different sorts of plants at many times of the year. What we’re talking about is winter pruning. Winter time is a quiet time for plants. Many deciduous plants have already lost their leaves and have gone dormant. This means that they are no longer actively growing and making food. Winter pruning means that you prune trees and shrubs while they are dormant. If you prune deciduous trees and shrubs in the winter, this will help them grow more in the spring. Winter pruning reduces … Continue reading

Illinois Moves Forward on Insurance Exchange

The state of Illinois is taking steps to move forward on its health insurance exchange. The state sees the value in doing this no matter which candidate wins the 2012 Presidential election. A coalition of concerned groups in Illinois urged Governor Pat Quinn to set up Illinois’ exchange. Part of the Affordable Care Act requires every state to set up their own health insurance exchange. The exchanges will allow people to find an affordable health insurance plan. All exchanges are expected to be up and running by January 1, 2014. States that choose not to create their own state-run exchange … Continue reading

The Gift of Time

We’re coming up on my absolute favorite day of the year. Sunday marks the end of daylight-saving time. Get ready to move those clocks back an hour to standard time and relish the extra 60 minutes of shut-eye. With all due respect to Christmas, Thanksgiving and Mother’s Day, which are all very special occasions, it’s hard to compete against a day that showers millions with the precious gift of time. Think about it; how many times in the course of a single day do you wish you could wave a magic wand and be granted extra time to tackle the … Continue reading

A Time of Transition

Yesterday was our Stake meeting to realign the ward boundaries in our stake. A lot of big changes took place. It was an exciting (although very long) meeting, and I am excited about the new changes. One thing I learned is that our ward was originally established in 1905. It is so amazing to be a part of a ward with such a history. Although the boundaries have changed many times since then, it is very cool to think about all the members of the church that have lived in my neighborhood before me. Another interesting fact that I learned … Continue reading

Time To Get Ready For Indoor Fun

It has been getting rather chilly in the mornings and in the evenings around here. I have been trying to ignore it, and on the sunny days that is fairly easy to do because by about eleven in the morning it is usually warm enough for a short sleeved shirt. Today, calling in a heating oil delivery was on my to – do list so for a brief period of time I had to acknowledge that these sunny, warm days are soon going to give way to the damp chill of late fall and the bitter cold and snow of … Continue reading

Alone Time

Remember the days in high school when the captain of the football team or president of the student body wouldn’t give you the time of day, let alone a peck on the cheek. Back then, you may have lamented the harsh sting of loneliness and wondered if you’d be doomed to walk the halls of life solo for the rest of eternity. Then, you gave birth and going to the toilet, showering, or even brushing your teeth became a team sport. From the moment your baby arrives in your arms until he or she moves out of the nest, “me … Continue reading
