Time to Unwind

Trying to manage the everyday tasks of parenting alone can be taxing on anybody. It can be unbelievably stressful and if you’re not careful you can easily find yourself burned out before your day is through. It is crucial to take a little “me time” each day to collect your thoughts and unwind a little bit. The more stressed you are, the more stressed your little ones will be. One of the most therapeutic things you can do is breathe. Once a day, or more if you are feeling particularly stressed, take some time out to simply breathe in and … Continue reading

Time for a Little Pampering

As single moms we are always putting our children first, but sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves too. Everybody knows that taking on the responsibilities of a single parent can be overwhelming. It takes a toll on every aspect of your life. After a while you just get burned out. When you start feeling like you’re on the verge of breaking down take a little time out to pamper yourself. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Yeah right, I’m a single mom. I don’t have the time or the money to pamper myself!” I’ve been there, I know … Continue reading

Taking Time Off from Work

One of my favorite shows to watch is “Cake Boss.” If you haven’t seen the show it’s about a guy named Buddy who runs a bakery in New Jersey. He creates the most beautiful and extraordinary cakes you have ever seen. He is passionate about baking. He is doing what he loves. Even when he gets time off from work, he still ends up working. Recently his family took a trip to Rome. It was supposed to be his chance to unwind and relax. Instead, he found himself baking. He obviously found it difficult to take time off from what … Continue reading

The Best Time of Day

Are you a morning person or a night owl? Throughout my school years, I was a morning person. I arranged my college schedule to have class in the mornings and afternoons free. I’d still rather do the bulk of my thinking in the early part of the day and leave the after-lunch hours for less brain-intensive activities. Brain power can actually wax and wane as the day progresses! Researchers have looked at the “best” times of day for different activities, based on brain chemistry. Early mornings (like the first few hours after you wake up) are the best time for … Continue reading

Family Meal Time Benefits

Eating a meal together at the table with your spouse and children, sounds like such a simple thing doesn’t it? But it can have lasting effects. Family meals are more important than we realize. According to research, teenagers of families that eat together at the table are less likely to get into trouble, less likely to take drugs and to suffer depression. Sitting down and eating together is a relaxing and sociable time. It is a time for husband and wife to share their day and talk about it, as well as let the children share what’s been happening. It … Continue reading

Bath Time Fun

Tired of the old bath time routine? Me too! If you need a couple of quick and easy ways to spice of the watery experience, look no further. Here are several exciting ways you can make tub time more enjoyable and memorable tonight! Take a handful of those simple tea light candles, you know, the ones in those handy round little silver nests that IKEA, Pier 1 and other stores sell by the bag full, and position them safely around the bathroom. Only set the candles in places where they can be seen but not touched by your little bundles … Continue reading

The Life of a Working Single Mother

The life of a single mother is packed. Her mornings are spent running around like mad trying to get all the kids ready for school, packing lunches, pouring cereal, gathering things for work, making sure the kids got their homework done, then rushing to get them to the bus on time, and if she’s lucky she may even get out the door in time for work. She spends the day slaving away at her job, then comes home to make dinner, help the kids with homework, do the dishes, get the kids bathed and ready for bed, stories, and finally … Continue reading

Little Eyes Are Fast Asleep

It seems the only “me time” I get these days is when Logan is fast asleep, even then it’s a little touch and go. This is often when I am up working on all of the things that I couldn’t manage to get done with a 4 year old that day, but it is also a time that I can relax, even if only for a few moments. We’ve been out of school for a few weeks now. For some reason I thought this would mean I would have more time to get things done. Somehow our days were just … Continue reading

The Treasures That Fill Your Home

You’re such a “Bah Humbug,” my daughter said to me with a chuckle.  Here it was the day after Christmas and she had woken up to a house put back together. That’s right.  The lights were taken down from the windows.  The Christmas tree was packed up and there was no sign that decorations had ever filled the rooms. I’m really not a Scrooge.  I love Christmas.  I treasure this time of year.  And I enjoy decorating my home. But I am so much more comfortable when everything is normal.  My normal means the many picture frames that decorate the … Continue reading

Suffering from Perfectionism

I am a recovering perfectionist.  I never attended therapy or a group session but I just learned over the years that I and my family would be much happier if I just learned to let things go. I cannot tell you the burden this has lifted from my shoulders, especially during times like this…the holidays.  I know there are many of you out there who are stressing out instead of enjoying this time of year. How do you know if you are suffering from perfectionism?  Well, let me first say that there is nothing wrong with wanting everything to go … Continue reading
