Being Frugal Is A Way Of Life – New FL Blogger Intro

Finally, I’m writing my Frugal Living introduction post. Better late than never, I always say. I wanted to say hello to my fellow FL living blogger Mary Ann Romans, and all of Families.com new bloggers. Since starting with this website about a month ago I’ve been having a lot of fun writing in my various topics. Being able to share and learn is a wonderful thing. As the title of my blog today states, being frugal truly is a way of life, not just one area of it. Many times someone may start out counting pennies in the area of … Continue reading

Getting the Most Benefit from Physical Therapy

If you choose to undergo physical therapy, you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. Here are some tips to help you get the most benefit from your treatment! Remember that this is an active treatment — physical therapy is not something done TO you. It is something you take part in. If you’re not going to do the work, you are wasting your time and the physical therapist’s time. Do your homework. Again, it’s a waste of time if you only put the effort in when your physical therapist is watching — your progress will be very slow … Continue reading

Eight Homework Helping Tips

In a previous blog, I wrote about how some parents help too much with their kids’ homework-some going so far as to complete science fair projects themselves. In the June 2006 issue of ParentLife, eight tips are offered to help parents become better homework helpers. Help your child with his homework but don’t do it for him. Your role is to offer assistance, if needed, not to supply them with the answers. If your child is struggling, show him how to put on his “thinking cap” and find the solutions on his own. Officially designate a study area, one that … Continue reading

Homework

Homework tends to have a bad reputation among students and parents alike. However, homework can be very rewarding for both you and your child. In moderation, homework can allow you to be a part of your child’s education and help you and your child grow together. Why do teachers give homework? Research shows that when homework is examined by teachers and discussed with students, grades and academic progress improves. Teachers give homework to help students review and understand lessons that were taught. Teachers also give homework as a method to assess the child’s understanding of the material. From completing homework, … Continue reading

Homework Clubs

Guys, have you heard about homework clubs? Homework clubs are a way for kids to get together and do their homework while being supervised by parents or teachers. Some kids find it more productive working in such an environment as opposed to working home alone. Some clubs are sponsored by schools, libraries or private tutoring companies. If you’re interested in having your child attend one, just check around in your community or consider starting one of your own. If you decide to start your own, here are a few things to keep in mind: The location should be one that … Continue reading

Eating, Sleeping and Getting Up Part II

We continue now with part two of Eating, Sleeping and Getting Up. The author offers some great tips on how to end bedtime battles. For one thing, she points out preparing for bed should start when you come from work at the end of the day, not 15 minutes before the child is supposed to go to sleep. I know that I personally try to get Tyler to start winding down and getting ready for bed quite early, generally at least an hour or so before his 8 pm scheduled bedtime. Still many nights turn into a battle of wills. … Continue reading

Tips for Getting Homework Done

Homework – the very word most children dread hearing. While some kids seem to do well in school without even trying, other children study for hours and find homework difficult. If your child falls into the latter category of struggling with homework, then you understand the anxiety and frustration that has become a nightly ritual. Learning should be a good experience for children, not one filled with despair. The good news is that you can help your child with homework by breaking each task down into simple terms. As an example, try using visuals as a learning tool. If your … Continue reading

Morning Storms

My family and I had lived in Texas for half a decade until two months ago. When we left they were experiencing a terrible drought while much of the rest of the country was suffering from flooding due to all of the rain. My family has been fortunate to avoid either disaster (as we didn’t deal with crops or encounter any flooding). Having returned to the Midwest, we find ourselves in a rather lush environment that has recently been getting its fair share of rain. You know how the weather can affect your mood? I’m normally happier on days when … Continue reading

What Annoys You the Most About Back-to-School?

Forget about the Dyson, I should have asked Santa for a label maker for Christmas. Not that the big guy delivered on my uber vacuum Christmas wish (cue Barbie Dream House flashback). Still, I might have had a better chance of scoring the less expensive “mom tool.” It sure would have come in handy a few days ago when I was forced to label nearly 100 individual school supplies. Did I mention I only have one kid… and she’s in kindergarten. HALF-DAY KINDEGARTEN! I’m not here to kvetch about the inordinate amount of items (in my opinion) needed to educate … Continue reading

Why Parents Complete Work for Their Child: Reason 2

In my past couple of articles, I have discussed parents’ involvement in their children’s homework assignments. While some parents help very little, some parents end up actually completing the work for the child. Some parents do the work for the child because the child is academically incapable of completing it himself. In this article I would like to discuss those parents who complete the work because their children are too tired or busy. In this case, the parents need to revise their priority list. Some parents actually comment that their child does not have time to study or complete assignments … Continue reading
